Helix piercing size guide

Helix Piercing: How to Measure and Choose Your Helix Piercing

In order to best choose the size of your future jewelry, here is a size guide providing useful information for comparing, measuring and choosing the right size jewelry.

PLEASE NOTE: This size guide is a general suggestion based on our experience with piercings. Please note that depending on individual body shape and the conditions under which the piercing was performed, it is important to consider that the length and/or choice of jewelry may vary from person to person.

General information

The helix piercing allows you to wear a varied choice of jewelry:

The screw-on labret or clip-on labret

Particularly appreciated with a small brilliant or with a real diamond (diamond helix piercing), the most common jewel is the labret which is composed of a flat platform which will be at the back of the cartilage and at the other end there is a screw thread to screw in a ball, brilliant or diamond.

Certainly the most common type of jewelry for helix piercing, the bioplast (bioflex) labret with a "clip" insert compatible with clip-on jewelry: this type of jewelry has the advantage of being comfortable while being easy to remove and replace and offers a very large choice of gold clip-on jewelry (pendant helix piercing, snake helix piercing, cultured pearl helix piercing, etc.)

The ring or horseshoe or spiral for the helix piercing

The ring is the trendy jewelry for helix piercings. However, it is important to wait for complete healing (around 6 months) before wearing this type of jewelry.

Alternatives to helix piercings on the ear include rook piercings, daith piercings, industrial piercings, conch piercings, etc.

What size is a helix piercing?

The helix piercing has a rod (and screw) thickness of 1.2mm , this is the standard size.

This allows you to wear all kinds of jewelry, from the smallest and most discreet to the most sophisticated

For a fine and refined gold jewel, the 1.2mm screw is perfect for helix piercing (infinity helix piercing, pink zircon helix piercing, gold helix ring).

The helix (cartilage) piercing can also be pierced with a thickness of 1.6mm, but this remains less common.

How to measure your helix piercing?

It is important to have a piercing jewelry with a bar that is the correct length.

In fact, a bar that is too short would compress the cartilage and could be painful, while a bar that is too long would encourage snagging.

Note that for the clip-on bioplast bar, as there is no screw thread, you have to measure from the base, excluding the platform, to the end of the platform.

To measure a labret, measure the length of the bar excluding the platform and excluding the screw thread as follows:

To measure a ring for a helix piercing, you can simply take a ring you already own and measure its internal diameter:

For helix (cartilage) piercings, the most common ring size varies between 6mm and 8mm.

For example, if you want a ring close to the ear and the helix, opt for 6mm, if you want a more pendant-like ring, opt for a 7mm or even 8mm helix ring.

However, if you are still unsure about the size of the ring you need for your helix piercing, we recommend asking your piercer for help.
