General information

There are several locations for mouth piercings, the two most common being the Madonna/Monroe piercing (above the lip) and the labret/offset labret piercing (below the lip).

Less common, there are also the medusa piercing, bite piercings (cyber bites, dahlia bites, angel bites, etc.) or even the smiley piercing.

These piercings offer the possibility of wearing a wide variety of jewelry.

Madonna/Monroe Piercing :

The screw-on labret or clip-on labret

Particularly appreciated with a small brilliant or with a real diamond (diamond madonna piercing), the most common jewel is the labret which is composed of a flat platform which will be inside the mouth and at the other end there is a screw thread to screw in a ball, brilliant or diamond. Certainly the most common type of jewel for the madonna piercing, the bioplast (bioflex) labret with a "clip" insert compatible with clip-on jewelry: this type of jewelry has the advantage of being comfortable while being easy to remove and replace.

Labret/offset labret piercing :

The screw-on labret or clip-on labret

For the labret piercing, the most common jewelry remains the labret which is composed of a flat platform that will be inside the mouth and at the other end there is a screw thread to screw in a ball, brilliant, spike or even diamond. Highly appreciated for this piercing, the bioplast "clip" labret will allow you to wear a large choice of fine and refined jewelry.

The ring or the horseshoe or the spiral

The piercing ring is the trendy jewelry for the labret and offset labret. However, it is important to wait for complete healing (around 6 months) before wearing this type of jewelry.

What size is a mouth piercing?

The first criteria to take into account is the thickness of the stem (or screw) which will determine the size of the jewel according to the type of jewel you want to wear.

The two most common bar thicknesses are 1.2mm and 1.6mm (bar diameter) for mouth piercings

For both the Madonna piercing and the labret piercing, 1.2mm is the most common bar size for this piercing which allows you to wear all kinds of jewelry, from the smallest and most discreet to the most sophisticated.

This is also the bar size that is put in as a prosthesis when you get pierced.

For a fine and refined gold jewel, the 1.2mm screw is therefore the most recommended (diamond madonna piercing, gold ball labret piercing, emerald monroe piercing)

The 1.6mm screw, thicker and less common in this area, is often recommended by those who wish to wear more visible jewelry or larger piercing balls.

How to measure your mouth piercing?

It's important to have a piercing jewelry with a barbell that's the right length. A barbell that's too short will compress the lip and could be painful, while a barbell that's too long will cause snagging.

To measure a labret, measure the length of the bar excluding the platform and excluding the screw thread as follows:

Note that for the clip-on bioplast bar, as there is no screw thread, you have to measure from the base, excluding the platform, to the end of the platform.

To measure a ring for a labret or offset labret piercing, you can simply take a ring you already own and measure its internal diameter:

For labret piercing, the ring size ranges from 8mm to 11mm, with 8mm and 9mm being the most common sizes.

For the offset labret piercing, the ring size ranges from 7mm to 10mm, with 7mm and 8mm being the most common sizes.

Alternatively, to know the ring size you should choose, you can measure the length between the piercing hole and the edge of the lip: this measurement will give you in millimeters the approximate diameter most suitable for you:

For example , if the length of the space between your piercing hole and the edge of your lip is 8mm, then you will need to choose a ring with a diameter of 8mm.

However, if you are still unsure about the size of the ring you need for your mouth piercing, we recommend asking your piercer for help.
