Whether it's for your ear, your eyebrow, or even other parts of your body, here's everything you need to know for a safe and hassle-free piercing.
Getting pierced can be a rather amusing experience. We recommend taking the time to thoroughly research your future piercer (and piercer!) before getting your ear, nose, eyebrows, lip, or any other body part pierced.
Piercings have become fashionable over the years and are no longer a problem in society, just like beards and tattoos. In fact, celebrities such as Florent Manaudou, Lenny Kravitz, and even Johnny Depp have long sported various piercings.
In this article, we've gathered essential tips and information you need to know about men's piercings. Read this carefully before getting started, so you'll know how to take care of your piercing!
First golden rule: get pierced with a needle
When getting a piercing, always use a sterile needle rather than a piercing gun. This is because when using a gun, the hole in the lobe is formed by a blunt force that pierces the lobe tissue and creates an uneven scar tissue where the jewelry can lodge, so the trauma is much greater. Additionally, guns cannot be sterilized, while a hole made with a needle heals faster and causes less pain.
Don't buy the cheapest piercer and/or piercing.
If the price seems too low to be true (like €20 including jewelry), it's probably because they're cutting back on something, perhaps your safety and the quality of the jewelry they offer. Choose a clean place with diligent professionals who use specific piercing and healing products.
Septum piercing
The septum piercing, one of the oldest and most common piercings, is making a comeback. This piercing is located on a very thin membrane just below the septal cartilage. Any experienced and trustworthy piercer will know where to find this location, and a properly performed piercing can be painless and quick. Healing is also rapid, and your piercing professional can advise you on the best size for you.
Eyebrow piercings/ eyebrow piercings require patience
Eyebrow piercings are among the slowest to heal. Eyebrow follicular cysts are quite common and visible. They appear as small red bumps that can appear on either side of the piercing, caused by skincare products, dirt, or sweat clogging the new piercing and causing infection. We recommend applying sterile saline solution immediately after showering or cleansing, 2 to 3 times a day.
Avoid alcohol with a tongue piercing
Tongue piercings can be done from top to bottom or from bottom to top. Each piercer uses the technique that works best for them. The piercing is located between the two sides of the tongue muscle in a layer called the medial lateral, and it generally heals in about 8 to 12 weeks. The piercing bar is generally changed 2 to 3 weeks after piercing to avoid damaging the teeth. There has been less interest in this piercing in recent years due to dental health issues or the loss of novelty. To ensure proper healing, we recommend avoiding alcohol during the healing period to reduce the risk of swelling or inflammation. You can also use alcohol-free mouthwash 3 to 4 times a day.
Ear cartilage piercing
There are several types of ear piercings, some of the most common being the helix piercing , tragus piercing , conch piercing , rook piercing and daith piercing ... The daith, the cartilaginous fold inside the ear, has become very popular recently as some claim it can relieve certain types of migraines (although there are no medical studies to support this claim).
Lip piercings require special care
You can get your lips pierced just about anywhere: on the sides, in the middle of the philtrum (below the nasal septum), on the top, and on the bottom. Lip piercings are unique in that they require oral care in addition to regular maintenance of the external part of the piercing. For internal use, an alcohol-free mouthwash is generally recommended, as well as external care.
Nipple piercings are among the most painful piercings because men have many nerve endings in their nipples, making them very sensitive. However, the pain disappears once the piercing is completed, provided your piercer is a professional. Typically, this piercing is done at the base of the nipple and not through the areola (as this prolongs healing time and causes more pain). The healing time is quite long, on average 4 to 6 months. During this time, you should use sterile saline solution 2 to 3 times a day.
Penis piercing / sex piercing
Yep, you knew this was coming. There are many different types of penis piercings for men. The most common is the Prince Albert, which runs from the base of the penis to the urethra. Then there's the frenulum, which runs horizontally from the base of the head to the soft tissue. Next comes the apadravya, which runs from top to bottom across the head of the penis, and the ampallang, which runs horizontally across the head of the penis (and usually through or under the urethra). Finally, there's the dydoe, located at the top of the rear crown of the penis and extending vertically towards the glans.
Generally, Prince Albert and frenulum piercings are not too painful and heal relatively quickly. It takes approximately 10 to 16 weeks for the former, and 16 to 20 weeks for the latter. The others mentioned above require much longer healing times and can pose more risks. They can take more than 10 to 12 months to heal and require a period of complete abstinence. We strongly recommend checking the background of your piercer before proceeding, as inexperienced individuals can cause irreversible damage.
If you are suspicious, check the hygiene procedures your piercer has in place.
There are several ways to ensure that piercers adhere to strict hygiene and asepsis standards. First, ask to check their sterilization procedure records. These should be available at any reputable piercing studio or parlor. This way, you can ensure that the jewelry and all instruments used have been sterilized and recorded in a log or form before use. If something isn't in sterile packaging—that is, if it isn't sterilized before use—ask questions and be cautious. Also, observe the piercer in their environment, paying attention to what they touch, how they touch it, and whether they change gloves after touching anything in the procedure room.
